The new Janus Series from Negri Bossi combines the company's experience of hydraulic, electric and hybrid drive technologies to offer the market three new versions of this advanced hybrid solution that can be tailored to meet the customer’s particular requirements, whether these are driven by performance or economy. The hybrid solution makes it possible to use the most suitable actuator, hydraulic or electric, resulting in a more efficient process, coupled with higher energy efficiency. The JANUS series is both an advanced hybrid machine and a modular concept that is an ideal match between hydraulic technology and full-electric.

After evaluating the market and understanding the diverse range of moulded product groups facing our customers and the importance of processing each group in the most efficient manner, Negri Bossi decided to introduce the JANUS series. The Janus hybrid platform enables us to offer each customer the most productive and efficient solution for their particular production profile where a correctly specified machine that targets the optimum cycle with minimum energy consumption can pay long term dividends.
Last month we introduced you to the JANUS version equipped with the SMART ENERGY system; this system provides energy levels very close to the full-electric solution whilst providing performance levels that are difficult and expensive to achieve with full-electric machines.
This month we would like to introduce you to the other two JANUS versions which are the JANUS UNIVERSAL and the JANUS HIGH POWER.
JANUS UNIVERSAL
Like the SMART ENERGY machine, the JANUS UNIVERSAL employs the base platform technology consisting of direct-drive torque motors for mould movement and screw rotation. These two devices form the common platform on which the three JANUS versions are based and significantly reduce energy consumption by replacing the two most energy inefficient hydraulic functions of the injection moulding cycle with high efficiency and cost effective electric drives.
The remainder of the machines cycle is managed by two small variable displacement hydraulic pumps which ensure maximum hydraulic efficiency and complete overlapping of functions. This combination of technologies creates a powerful machine with high torque capabilities that provides the moulder with the versatility required to face a diverse range of moulding challenges whilst greatly reducing consumed energy and noise levels.
JANUS HIGH POWER
The JANUS HIGH POWER adds an extremely powerful injection drive which enables the JANUS to operate in high speed applications where more demanding injection conditions apply.
The HIGH POWER employs a small hydraulic pump along with accumulator technology to provide high injection speed capabilities, up to twice that of the standard machine. This drive enables the JANUS to accommodate applications with thin wall sections along with those where the moulded part has a high flow length to wall thickness ratio.
This technology equips the JANUS to provide economic solutions to an even more diverse range of moulding applications.
The JANUS machines come with a long list of standard equipment such as bimetallic barrels, digital proportional valves, magnetostrictive transducers, Bosch hydraulics, Siemens servo motors and drives, and the CANbus interface for peripheral device control and digital wireless communications, including the company’s Amico wireless network for easy remote support and diagnostics.

"Janus has the goal of completing the Negri Bossi offer in the field of injection machines for thermoplastics.
Since there are several types of applications in the field of plastic moulding, the machines must also be perfectly tailored to the client’s needs.
There is no one optimal solution, better than all the rest for every application, but it is possible to have the right machine for the application in question.
After having completed a series of completely hydraulic machines followed by another series of completely electric machines, we decided that it was a good idea to develop a series of hybrid machines to propose as the ideal link between the two.
The hybrid solution allows us to use the most suitable actuator, either electric or oil hydraulic, for the specific mechanism, thereby obtaining the most productive machine and the highest energy savings.

Electric actuators are provided for moving the mould and screw rotation with oil hydraulic actuators for the injection phase.
The machine can be configured in different ways by using variable flow rate pumps or accumulators, thereby producing equipment with different characteristics that can be used in a wide range of different fields, which ensures the highest customer satisfaction. The power consumption of the Janus Series (VJ) is only marginally higher than full-electric designs"
