Manthorpe group invests in Twin Shot Negri Bossi
The high performing Ripley based engineering and building products group Manthorpe, continues to push forward with a £180K-plus investment in a well structured R & D project to improve the functionality, ease of use and cost-effectiveness in manufacture costs of its already best selling "Face-Fix radiator pipe guide and seal".
 Central to the investment is a new twin shot Negri Bossi model V120-400H-165V, running a two-cavity transfer mould with the parts being transferred from cavity A (PP) to cavity B (TPE) via a Fanuc six-axis automation system.
The system also removes the finished parts from the mould and packs them into boxes ready for delivery.
Mike Challinor, head of Manthorpe's R&D operation, explained the rationale behind the investment: "We need to improve the performance of our products continuously. In the building industry we are constantly looking for areas where we can make life easier for installers in the field. If we can configure our products to perform more functions, consume less material in manufacture and offer easier installation, then we will be making positive progress. At the same time we are always aware that we must reduce our manufacturing costs where appropriate."
Manthorpe's improvement project for the Face-Fix has rationalised what was a three-component operation using two injection moulding machines with moulds requiring difficult manual assembly procedures into a single-cycle, fully automated operation producing a finished and packed product with improved characteristics.
 Mike concludes: "The mechanical bond achieved between the two materials in the Face-Fix by twin-shot moulding is an added benefit to us and our customers, ensuring a much stronger connection. A rubber seal has been added to the perimeter of the body, saving installers time by eliminating the need for any additional sealants and/or mastic."
